17th Annual Celebration of Leadership Draws Record Crowd

Nearly 600 community leaders, educators, students, and activists attended GSAFE’s 17th Annual Celebration of Leadership on Saturday, May 11th at the Monona Terrace in Madison.  Four remarkable graduating high school seniors were recognized for their leadership and commitment to creating safer and more just schools for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning (LGBTQ) youth and their allies.  This year’s scholarship recipients were:

Camden Goetz – Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School

Vicente Lezama – Fond du Lac High School

Christian Real Merino – Madison Memorial High School

Kassondra White – South Milwaukee High School

GSAFE also recognized Lisa Koenecke, School Counselor at River Bluff Middle School in Stoughton as Educator of the Year, and two groups were recognized with the Judi Devereux Community Activist Award: The TransParent Group and Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES!).

Thank you to everyone who came to our Celebration of Leadership and supported the event.

We will upload more photos from the event as well as a list of this year’s sponsors in the coming days.
