Transgender Awareness Week

Transgender Awareness Week is November 14th to 20th this year.

Transgender Awareness Week is commemorated to uplift the lives, experiences, and contributions of transgender and gender non-conforming people.  Many schools and GSAs will organize events to commemorate this week, which often culminates in Transgender Day of Remembrance, held on November 20th.
A number of national LGBT organizations have created resources students and educators can use to commemorate Transgender Awareness Week:
  • GLAAD has put together a great list of resources for Transgender Awareness Week, including a history of transgender visibility.  Check it out here: http://www.glaad.org/transweek
  • Every October, LGBTHistoryMonth.com lists 31 new LGBT icons, and if you go to their website you can click on the keyword “transgender” on the Icon Search page, and pull up all the transgender folks who have been recognized. Check it out here:  http://www.lgbthistorymonth.com/category/icon-tags/transgender
  • Finally, GLSEN National and GSA Network both have some really great resources on how to make your GSA more inclusive of transgender and gender non-conforming students.  Check out them out here and here.
If you know of any public events being organized in Wisconsin to commemorate Transgender Awareness Week or Trans Day of Remembrance, let us know and we will share them here!
